Corn cultivation continues to be an expanding activity in Tocantins. According to data from the 8th survey by the National Supply Company (Conab), Tocantins has already exceeded 322 thousand hectares of corn in the current harvest, in the second harvest, which is equivalent to an increase of 43,1% in the planted area compared to the past harvest; and production should reach 1,506 million tons of grain, an increase of 63% more than the production of the previous harvest.
The estimated corn production jumped from 924 thousand tons to 1.506 million tons of grains in this 2021/2022 harvest. The planting area increased from 225 thousand hectares to 322 thousand hectares of corn cultivation in this second planting season.
According to the agronomist from the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Aquaculture (Seagro), Thadeu Texeira Júnior, the corn area in the 2021/2022 harvest is experiencing a significant increase, mainly in 2nd harvest corn (safrinha). “This increase was benefited by the climatic conditions that allowed earlier soybean planting and, consequently, a favorable window for the cultivation of corn in succession to the soybean harvest, and so far the climatic conditions have been favorable to the development of crops, and Therefore, producers are expecting higher productivity than the 2020/2021 harvest”, he highlighted.
Data from Conab shows that the areas with the largest corn cultivation, second harvest, are in the municipalities of Porto Nacional with 38,76 thousand hectares, followed by Caseara (35 thousand), Santa Rosa do Tocantins (30 thousand) and Campos Lindos with 21,8.
