Coffee production in Mato Grosso increases 102% in four years

With the MT Produtivo Café Program, the Government of Mato Grosso has encouraged the expansion of coffee cultivation, through the delivery of seedlings and the distribution of irrigation kits to family farmers. The work carried out by the State Secretariat for Family Agriculture (Seaf) and the Mato Grosso Research, Assistance and Rural Extension Company (Empaer) is yielding positive results. According to data from the National Supply Company (Conab), there was a 102% growth in grain production in the last four years.

In 2019, 121,4 thousand bags of coffee were harvested and, this year, 245,8 thousand bags.

The seedlings delivered by the State are clonal coffee, which has high productivity in little space. In 2022 and 2023 alone, 300 coffee seedlings and 98 irrigation kits were delivered.

In addition to the Mato Grosso Government's investments in the sector, the start of production of clonal coffee plantations in the state in 2020 also contributed to the growth of production, according to Conab; the expansion of the production area; the increased use of fertilizers and the excellent climatic conditions during the grain growing cycle.

According to Conab, in addition, there is greater technology in the production and management system, also favoring the expression of this greater productive potential of new clonal cultivars.

“The general climatic conditions and the effective control of pests and diseases, except for some occasional losses due to fungal diseases in the flowering and fruit formation phase, in addition to pests such as mealybugs and borers, but without significant damage, were favorable to the crop and made this viable. production above that obtained in 2022”, states the survey.

The Secretary of Family Agriculture of Mato Grosso, Teté Bezerra, stated that, in addition to investments directly in production, the State seeks to improve the quality of coffee, by financing research, with resources from the Mato Grosso Research Support Foundation (Fapemat ).

“We are seeking to deepen our research and improve the quality of the coffee we are producing every day, thinking more and more about the good acceptance of the market, both in the state and abroad”, he explained.The Applied Research Program in Public Policies, to which the secretary said, will allocate R$1 million for research in the areas of coffee farming, cassava farming, banana farming and forage farming, to strengthen family farming. Currently, 31 municipalities in Mato Grosso produce the grain, the five largest of which are: Colniza, Juína, Aripuanã, Nova Bandeirantes and Cotriguaçu.
