A study launched by the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp) reveals that, in the last decade, the average productivity in value (R$/ha) of coffee properties in Brazil increased by 38%. According to the Coffee Agribusiness - Production, Transformation and Opportunities survey, the sector generated, on average, R$ 16,8 thousand per hectare in the period 2008-2011 and reached R$ 21,7 thousand per hectare in the average period from 2018-2021.
In terms of harvested volume, the average Brazilian productivity was 30,0 bags/ha in 2018-2021, while in 2008-2011 the indicator was 21,1 bags/ha, an expansion of 42,5%. Despite the reduction in planted area, the sector invested in technology and gained efficiency by increasing the number of trees planted and densifying the trees in production, providing an increase in production volume.
In the last ten years, coffee production has increased by 25,3%, considering the positive and negative biennial. In the average harvest from 2008/2009 to 2011/2012, Brazilian production went from 44,3 million bags of 60 kilos, to an average of 55,4 million bags between 2018/2019 and 2021/2022 (CONAB).
These numbers suggest an evolution in production factors, with genetic improvement, good agricultural practices and good infrastructure on properties. Investments in agricultural machinery, equipment and implements made it possible to increase productivity, production and the value generated.
Also contributing to the positive scenario for the activity is the 38% growth in the Gross Value of Agricultural Production (VBPA) between 2022 (R$54,8 billion) and the average of the last four years, 2018-2021 (R$39,8 billion ). When comparing the periods 2018-2021 and 2008-2011, the increase was 13%.
Minas Gerais has established itself as the largest national coffee producer, with around 50% of the total produced in Brazil (CONAB). The state occupies second place among the states with the highest productivity and first place in terms of production value, with more than half of the sector's VBPA.
