Celebrated on April 14, International Coffee Day highlights the importance of the beverage most consumed by Brazilians and one of the pillars of the country's agro-export economy. In 2024, Brazil reaffirmed its global leadership in the sector, exporting a record 50,4 million bags to 116 countries — a growth of 28,5% compared to the previous year.
Despite the positive performance in foreign trade, exporters face logistical bottlenecks at ports, especially in Santos (SP), where the issuance of phytosanitary certificates has caused delays and changes in shipping schedules. The National Union of Federal Agricultural Auditors (Anffa Sindical) warns of the need for investments in infrastructure and the restructuring of technical staff for agricultural inspection.
These professionals are responsible for ensuring the quality of the exported product, as well as preventing the entry of pests and diseases that threaten plantations. The phytosanitary certificate is a mandatory document for exports to markets such as Turkey, among others.
In the domestic market, consumers have been feeling the effects of the high price of coffee in their pockets. According to Anffa Sindical, high production costs — such as energy and fuel — and unfavorable weather conditions contribute to keeping prices high. Any reduction will depend on an exceptional harvest, something that is still uncertain given the climate and logistics scenario.
For the president of Anffa Sindical, Janus Pablo Macedo (pictured above), the excellence of Brazilian coffee is directly linked to the work of federal agricultural tax auditors. “They act preventively throughout the production chain, ensuring that coffee reaches Brazilian homes and cups around the world with quality and safety,” he said.
On this International Coffee Day, in addition to the traditional toast to the drink, the sector reinforces the importance of the technical backstage that supports the production and competitiveness of national agriculture.
