In the 2021/2022 harvest, the climatic irregularities recorded during the development of the plants, with long drought, fluctuations in rainfall and the occurrence of frosts, had a major impact on the yield of sugar cane in the states of São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná.
The quantification of this impact brought a new reduction in the estimates of the São Paulo sugar cane harvest in the latest Conab survey. For this season, production was reevaluated at 287,4 million tons, indicating a drop of 3,8% compared to the previous survey and a reduction of 18,9% compared to the volume harvested in the last harvest.
The productive potential of sugar cane was significantly harmed, falling from 79.719 kg/ha to 68.369 kg/ha (a 14,2% drop compared to the previous harvest). This season, there was also a reduction in the harvested area, mainly due to the replacement of sugar cane areas with grain crops, which proved to be more attractive. Therefore, the area harvested in this harvest totaled 4,2 million hectares, a reduction of 5,4% compared to the previous cycle.
With the lower sugarcane yield, sugar and ethanol productions were also lower. For this harvest, the estimate is that 150,24 million tons will be allocated to sugar production (-19,3%) and 137,2 million tons to ethanol production (-18,4%).
It is estimated that a production of 19,9 million tons of sugar (down 23,8% compared to the last harvest) and 11,05 billion liters of ethanol (down 23,2% compared to the production of the fuel in previous season).
