On April 14, the date on which International Coffee Day is celebrated, the Cerrado Mineiro Region celebrates an unprecedented feat in 2024: the issuance of five million Denomination of Origin (DO) seals for industrialized coffees. This milestone reflects not only the high quality and consistency of the beans grown in the region, but also the continuous expansion of its presence in more than 50 countries.

The growth is also significant in terms of green coffee certified with the DO seal. In 2024, the region saw a 160% increase, going from 115 to 300 certified bags. This advance proves the growing relevance of coffee from Cerrado Mineiro for roasters and consumers internationally.

“Our partnership with illycaffè, one of the largest roasters in Italy, was fundamental to this global projection. This collaboration boosted the volume of stamps issued and ensured the arrival of our coffee in dozens of countries. Before the partnership with the renowned Italian brand, the region issued around 250 thousand stamps per year for industrialized coffees. In 2024, we reached the impressive milestone of five million”, highlights Juliano Tarabal, executive director of the Federation of Coffee Growers of Cerrado.

To promote the Denomination of Origin (DO) seal, the Federation held a road show last October, visiting three important Italian cities: Milan, Florence and Rome. The choice of Italy was not random, as the country is among the largest importers of Brazilian coffee, especially from Cerrado Mineiro, in addition to highly valuing products with certification of origin – a factor that adds value to local coffee.

Denomination of Origin: certification of excellence

The Denomination of Origin is granted to coffees produced in the 55 municipalities that make up the Cerrado Mineiro Region. Covering approximately 250 thousand hectares of cultivated area, the region produces around six million 60 kg bags per year – which is equivalent to 25,4% of Minas Gerais' production and 12,7% of national production.

The DO seal ensures compliance with strict quality standards and production under unique terroir conditions, such as altitude, climate and characteristic soil. This differential has been decisive in conquering demanding markets and strengthening the Cerrado Mineiro brand abroad.

According to the president of the Federation of Coffee Growers of Cerrado, Gláucio de Castro, the region’s success is the result of a combination of factors, including investment in technological innovation, professional management and a commitment to sustainable practices. “Producers adopt responsible management techniques, which ensures not only the excellence of the final product, but also the preservation of the environment and local socioeconomic development,” he emphasizes.

The Federation brings together six cooperatives: Carmocer, Carpec, Coocacer Araguari, Coopadap, Expocacer and MonteCCer.

International impact and perspectives

The introduction of Cerrado Mineiro coffee into more than 50 countries confirms the strengthening of its reputation. The significant increase in the volume of coffees certified with the DO seal demonstrates the recognition of the region as one of the main suppliers of high-quality coffees worldwide.

“The increase in certified volumes shows how collaboration between producers, cooperatives and foreign partners has been essential. We are building a solid path to further elevate the level of coffee from Cerrado Mineiro. Reaching five million seals issued and recording significant growth in green coffee certification reaffirms our prominent position in the production of excellent coffees,” concludes Juliano Tarabal.
