3S Program increases number of participants who prove zero deforestation, rural worker well-being, management of greenhouse gas emissions and continuous improvement of sustainability indicators

Starting this month, Cargill will pay an additional amount (premium) to producers who sold 3S certified sustainable soybeans in the 2019/2020 harvest, which represents an increase of 75% in relation to the volume sold in the 2018/2019 harvest. In total, 143 producers from the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Pará, Paraná and Rondônia benefited from the initiative. Compared to the previous harvest, there are 48 more producers who sold soy certified by the 3S Program (Sustainable Supply Solutions) and who will receive part of 50% of the net profit obtained by Cargill from the sale of certified soy.

"This growth proves that Brazilian producers are carrying out the process of continuous improvement, increasingly meeting the sustainability requirements required by the 3S Program and the purchase of soybeans around the world", explains Renata Nogueira, Sustainability Manager at Cargill in Brazil . "We work side by side with the producer, offering expertise and inputs for sustainable production. With this, Brazil takes another step to meet the demands for certified soy", she highlights.

To obtain 3S certification, the grains produced on these farms must demonstrate zero deforestation since 2008, management of greenhouse gas emissions, good agricultural practices and the well-being of rural workers. "We are very proud of this award, as it is recognition of the effort of continuous work that we have developed with the implementation of a series of improvements guided by the IBS teams in the 3S Program", says producer Nilson Aparecido Forastieri, who has a property served by the 3S in the municipality of Campo Novo do Parecis, in Mato Grosso.

About the 3S Program

Created in 2010 and recognized in 2015 by FEFAC - European Federation of Animal Feed Manufacturers (European Feed Manufacturers' Federation) as one of the sustainability certifications recommended for the entity's members, the 3S Program is the result of the partnership between Cargill and the Institute BioSistema (IBS) to promote awareness among producers, diagnosis of the property and the development of an individual action plan based on the concept of continuous improvement. In addition to promoting more sustainable production, 3S reinforces the importance of legal compliance in environmental, labor and health & safety issues, reducing business risks, such as fines, among others. The entire program is offered free of charge and voluntarily to the producer.

IBS also carries out technical visits every six months for guidance and offers several communication channels with producers so that they can resolve their doubts at any time via the 3S portal, groups in messaging applications and the call center.

On the 3S Program portal, all data collected in the field is stored securely and confidentially. Each producer has exclusive access that allows them to view their diagnosis, action plan and manage their property's sustainability indicators, in addition to access to sector news and program updates. By analyzing data collected in the field, it is possible to identify the biggest challenges for each region and propose improvement actions. As a result of this work, 12 e-books were produced that address the use of personal protective equipment (known as PPE), in addition to issues such as health and safety at work for rural producers.

The 3S Program processes data collected in the field, with which it calculates the emission of greenhouse gases during the cultivation of soybeans on each participating property, aiming to reduce the impact on the environment.
