The Campo Limpo System, a Brazilian reverse logistics program for empty packaging and post-consumer leftovers of agricultural pesticides, has just surpassed the mark of 550 thousand tons of these materials sent for recycling or incineration, since the beginning of its activities in 2002. Only in In 2019, more than 45 thousand tons were removed from Brazilian fields.

The System, which has inpEV (National Institute of Empty Packaging Processing) as a managing entity, is responsible for the environmentally correct disposal of 94% of primary packaging sold in the country. This percentage makes Brazil a global reference in this work. “The Brazilian reverse logistics system in the field is one of the most efficient in the world and considered an example by countries that have similar programs. This success is due, in particular, to clear and efficient legislation, which establishes the concept of shared responsibility, and to the engagement of all links in the agricultural production chain (manufacturing industry, distribution channels, farmers and public authorities), which comply with its role correctly”, explains João Cesar M. Rando, CEO of inpEV.

Of the total packaging destined, more than 90% are recycled, giving rise to the raw material for the production of various artifacts, including new packaging that is returned to the agrochemical industry. “Thus, we are a model of circular economy by closing the life cycle of the material within the System itself, boosting the economy, generating employment and contributing to sustainability”, highlights Rando.

The environmental benefits of the program are confirmed by an eco-efficiency study by Fundação Espaço Eco. Between 2002 and 2018, the System avoided the emission of 688 thousand tons of CO2and saved enough energy to supply 4 million homes for a year.
