The thirtieth edition of the Brazilian Congress of Weed Science (CBCPD) begins today, at ExpoUnimed, in Curitiba, Paraná. Promoted every two years by the Brazilian Society of Weed Science, the event will bring together the most current discussions in the area in Brazil and around the world, under the joint organization of Embrapa Soja, EPAGRI, Fundação ABC, PUC - PR, IFC, IFRS, UEM, UENP, UFPR, UTFPR, UFSC Curitibanos and UFPEL.
Faced with a national economy in crisis and heavily dependent on agriculture, which accounts for a quarter of Brazil's GDP, it is essential to discuss the issue of weeds, one of the main bottlenecks in the agricultural sector. The presence of weeds in large crops has been shown to be a potential threat to productivity, which can result in losses of more than 80%, in addition to a significant increase in production costs. In the case of the presence of weeds resistant to herbicides, such as bittergrass and horseweed, the increase in management costs can reach 400%.
The opening ceremony takes place at 19:30 pm, followed by the opening lecture, given by professor and speaker Nailor Marques Jr and happy hour.
Opening lecture - Nailor Marques Jr.
The theme chosen by Nailor to open the Congress - “Entrepreneurial Attitudes” - brings a new perspective on agribusiness and is quite relevant at this time when agribusiness has challenges to be overcome that require, in addition to technical knowledge, the game of waistline, the ability to innovate and the entrepreneur's motivation.
“Agribusiness is doing very well, the crisis is passing alongside it. However, the big challenge is to demonstrate that we can do much more with what we have. There is not much more possibility of creating physical agricultural spaces. The challenge in this segment is to extract more products, with higher quality from the same amount of land. Two very large countries are including new consumers (China and India), the challenge for agribusiness is to deliver quality products to them and everyone else. Only precision science can solve this equation”, concludes Nailor.
Scientific programming
During the four days of the event, more than 800 scientific works will be presented and more than 20 discussion panels and 7 major lectures will be held. Among the highlighted themes are: Resistance in Weeds; Regulatory aspects in the area of pesticides; 10 years of RR soybeans in Brazil; Weed Management in forest areas; Main weed problems in new agricultural frontiers: MATOPIBA and the use of drones to combat plants.
The XXX CBCPD expects to bring together more than 800 participants, including students, businesspeople, producers, teachers, researchers and consultants to focus on the theme “Weed Science: knowledge and technology at the service of the farmer” and seek solutions to the challenges faced by the segment . For those interested in participating, it is possible to register on site.
