Brazilian coffee shipments totaled 3,386 million 60 kg bags in September this year, representing an increase of 4,5% in relation to the 3,240 million sent abroad in the same period of 2021. In terms of revenue, the performance is a record for the months of September, with an inflow of US$805,5 million, or an increase of 49,8% in the same annual comparison. The data is part of the monthly statistical report of the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé).

The performance reflects a greater entry of Arabica coffees from the new harvest, which counterbalances the intense demand from national industries for canephora (robusta + conilon) coffees, according to an analysis by the entity's president, Günter Häusler. "Arabica exports rose 18% compared to September 2021 and registered the second best level in the last five years. Thus, in total, the drop in conilon and Robusta shipments was compensated, generating a positive closing last month", he assesses.

With the current performance, exports in the first three months of the 2022/23 harvest year reached 8,742 million bags, generating US$ 2,074 billion in the period, or the best performance in the last five years. In comparison with the period from July to September 2021, the numbers show a decrease of 2,7% in volume, but an increase of 48,9% in foreign exchange revenue.

Civil year

From January to the end of September this year, Brazilian coffee exports totaled 28,748 million bags, representing a slight decline of 3,9% compared to the 29,927 million bags recorded in the first nine months of 2021. Foreign exchange revenue is a record, with shipments yielding US$6,730 billion to date, an amount that represents significant gains of 60,4% compared to the US$4,197 billion recorded between January and September of last year.

"Arabica coffee exports had the best performance in this nine-month period of the last five years, contributing to mitigate the drop in volume to date. The record in foreign exchange revenue in the 2022 aggregate reflects the favorable exchange rate and the good level of the average shipment price, which increases 67% compared to 2021 and reaches US$ 234,12 per bag", comments Häusler.

On the other hand, even with the occasional improvement in the scenario, the president of Cecafé recalls that bottlenecks in logistics remain challenging. "I never tire of praising the work of exporting companies, which, faced with a reality far below normality in global maritime trade, with increased costs, reduced availability of containers, congestion in ports in North America and Europe, lack of bookings , cargo rollovers, among other adversities, continue to unfold and keep Brazil as a loyal supplier of coffee in volume, quality and sustainability, even with the increase in logistical obstacles in September", he adds.
