Brazilian coffee exports totaled 4,356 million 60 kg bags in October, generating foreign exchange revenue of US$847,2 million. The performance implies an increase of 21,8% in volume, but a slight decrease of 2,5% in values compared to the same month in 2022. The data is part of the monthly statistical report from the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé) .

According to Márcio Ferreira, president of the entity, the performance was "quite positive", which made last month the second best October in the last five years. The most significant highlight occurred in conilon and robusta coffees, which, with 662 thousand bags sent abroad, had their second best performance for a single month in history and grew 479,5% compared to October 2022.

"Problems in the harvests of important producers of this variety have been directing buyers to our canephoras, which remain very competitive in the global market. Vietnam and Indonesia themselves are seeking our coffees, with exports to these producing countries increasing 565,3% and 123,2 .XNUMX%, respectively, from January to October this year", he explains.

Ferreira also highlights the high percentage growth in shipments made to Mexico. “Also important producers, the Mexicans increased imports of our green coffees by 432,4%, already purchasing 341,5 thousand bags of the product in 2023”, he reveals.

The president of Cecafé explains that the performance of exports was positive when one also observes the increase in logistical obstacles in recent months, such as the lower availability of containers and, mainly, recurring delays of ships and problems in opening gates.

According to the Detention Zero (DTZ) report, prepared by Ellox Digital through a partnership with Cecafé, the rate of ship delays at the Port of Santos (SP) has gradually worsened in recent months and reached 76% in October, the highest percentage recorded this year.

"These problems result in regular postponements of shipments and yards full of containers in Santos port terminals, which are having difficulty receiving cargo due to physical limitations of space in the terminal. With voluminous and growing shipments of sugar, cotton, soybeans and corn in the second semester, for example, the obstacles have worsened and continue to cause concern about the return to normal operations", analyzes Ferreira.

He adds that the origin of these delays in ships at the Port of Santos was the occurrence of cyclones and tropical storms in the Southern Region of Brazil. "These climate adversities are preventing vessels from docking in southern ports, which is causing the accumulation of cargo in other Brazilian ports, such as the Santos port complex, for example", he explains.

2023/24 Harvest

With the performance measured in October, shipments in the first four months of the 2023/24 harvest year rose to 14,394 million bags, showing an increase of 16% over the same period in the previous season and registering the second best result in the last five years. Revenue fell 3,9% in the same comparative period, reaching US$ 2,854 billion.

In relation to performance in the first 10 months of 2022, there are drops of 5,5% in volume and 16% in foreign exchange revenue. "This result probably reflects the logistical problems that have been gradually growing throughout this year", points out the president of Cecafé.
