Its vice president of marketing and sales, Jan Stechmann, is expected to come to the country in February
Brazilian coffee exports in 2022, carried out to 122 countries, obtained record foreign exchange revenue of US$ 9,233 billion, showing a substantial growth of 46,9% compared to the US$ 6,285 billion recorded in the year before last. In volume, the country shipped 39,350 million 60 kg bags, showing a drop of 3,1% compared to 2021. The data comes from the statistical report of the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé).
In the first six months of the 2022/23 harvest, national shipments reached 19,341 million bags and generated US$4,576 billion for the country, registering a decline of 1,7% in volume, but an increase of 31,5% in revenue. These results were achieved with the 3,195 million bags sent abroad in December, which generated US$707 million – a decrease of 17,9% in volume and 11,8% in revenue compared to the same month in the previous year.
According to the president of Cecafé, Márcio Ferreira, the record revenue in 2022 reflects the higher prices for the product and the favorable exchange rate. "The commercial dollar remained above R$5 throughout most of last year, and coffee prices remained at satisfactory levels until they started to fall recently. Thus, the average price per bag was US$234,64 , was the biggest in the last five years and grew 52% over the previous year", he comments.
Regarding the drop in volume, he recalls that 2022 was still a year impacted by logistical bottlenecks in global maritime trade, in addition to geopolitical conflicts and greater interest from the national industry in Robusta and Conilon coffees.
"Logistics obstacles have been gradually decreasing, but we are still far from normality, facing reduced availability of containers, difficulties in obtaining bookings, cargo rollovers and high costs. In addition, Brazilian factories have increased the use of conilon in their blends , which reduced exports of the variety by 60% last year. We also cannot forget the impact of the conflict in Eastern Europe, with shipments to Russia falling by almost 50%. These factors greatly hinder the work of exporters, who deserve all our respect for being able to maintain Brazil as the main coffee supplier in the world", he highlights.
Among the top 10 coffee destinations in Brazil last year, only Japan did not show growth. "This demonstrates that large global consumers continue to seek, from the largest global producer and exporter, the quality and diversity of our coffees, which meet the strictest socio-environmental criteria and the sustainability requirements of international markets, making Brazil a loyal supplier" , highlights Ferreira.
The United States leads the list of the product's largest destinations in 2022, with the import of 7,985 million bags, a volume 2,1% greater than that purchased in 2021 and equivalent to 20,3% of the total. Next comes Germany, with the acquisition of 6,844 million bags (+4,2% and representation of 17,4%); Italy, with 3,355 million (+13,7% / 8,5% of the total); Belgium, with 2,921 million bags (+2,7% / 7,4% of the total); and Japan, with imports of 2,873 million bags (-25,5% / 4,8% of the total).
With the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, exports to the region declined last year. Eastern Europe imported 1,113 million bags of coffee from Brazil, a volume that implies a drop of 45,3% compared to 2021. Only Russia had a decline of 46,6%, with its purchases reaching 1,217 million, in the year before last, to 650.174 bags in 2022. Thus, the Russians left sixth place in the ranking and dropped to 15th place.
On the other hand, the performance achieved in coffee shipments to Colombia, the Netherlands (Netherlands) and South Korea deserves to be highlighted positively. Colombians occupied sixth place in the ranking by purchasing 1,721 million bags, a volume 48,1% higher than in 2021 The Dutch increased their imports by 75,6%, reaching 916.412 bags and taking this nation to ninth place. The 10th position goes to the Koreans, who purchased 858.228 bags and increased their imports by 25,2%.
Coffee shipments from Brazil also had a significant performance to China. The Asian country purchased 414.842 bags of the product last year, representing an increase of 21,3% compared to the 341.898 bags imported a year earlier. With this performance, the Chinese rose to 20th place in the ranking of the product's main destinations.
Arabica coffee was the most exported in 2022, with 34,077 million bags shipped abroad, or 86,6% of the total. Instant coffee registered shipments equivalent to 3,725 million bags, accounting for 9,5%. Next comes the canephora variety (robusta + conilon), with exports of 1,501 million bags (3,8%), and the roasted and roasted and ground product, with 47.747 bags (0,1%).
According to the president of Cecafé, the reduction in canephora shipments is significant, but it had its positive side. “The sharp drop in exports of this variety was due to the growth in demand from national industries, which, on the other hand, contributed to shipments of soluble coffee remaining at levels close to 4 million bags, which means that we ship abroad product with more added value”, he analyzes.
Differentiated coffees, which have superior quality or some certification of sustainable practices, accounted for 17% of total Brazilian exports of the product in 2022, reaching 6,703 million bags. This amount represents a drop of 12,6% compared to the 7,669 million bags shipped by the country in the previous year.
The average price of the differentiated product was US$281,26 per bag, providing revenue of US$1,885 billion in the 12 months, which corresponds to 20,4% of that obtained from total shipments. In the annual comparison, the value is 18,5% higher than that recorded in the entire year 2021.
In the ranking of the main destinations for differentiated coffees last year, the United States is at the top, with imports of 1,601 million bags, equivalent to 23,9% of the total of this type of product exported. Next comes Germany, with 1,165 million bags and a representation of 17,4%; Belgium, with 846.168 bags (12,6%); Italy, with 410.246 bags (6,1%); and Japan, with 310.356 bags (4,6%).
The Santos maritime complex (SP) was the main exporter of coffee from Brazil in 2022, with the shipment of 31,542 million bags, which is equivalent to 80,2% of the total. Completing the list of the top three are the ports of Rio de Janeiro, which account for 15,3% of shipments, with the shipment of 6,038 million bags last year, and Paranaguá (PR), with the export of 354.519 bags ( 0,9%).
With foreign exchange revenue of US$9,233 billion, coffee accounts for 2,8% of Brazil's total exports in 2022, which generated US$334,463 billion for the country. When analyzing performance within agribusiness (US$ 159,091 billion), a sector that corresponds to 47,6% of total Brazilian shipments, the representation of coffee production shipments rises to 5,8%.
