More fertilizers for more wheat?
Currently, only 48% of the applied fertilizer is absorbed by plants; the remainder is leached into the soil or emitted into the atmosphere
Brazilian foreign sales of agribusiness products were US$15,20 billion in June 2024, an increase in the value of exports compared to the month of May, which reached 15,02 billion.
Brazilian grain exports rose from 14,96 million tons in June 2023 to 15,07 million tons in June 2024 (+0,7%). In addition to the increase in the volume of grain exports, there was an increase in the quantity of: cane sugar (+335,1 thousand tons); cellulose (+182,8 thousand tons); cotton not carded or combed (+100,1 thousand tons); soybean meal (+84,0 thousand tons); green coffee (+64,6 thousand tons). Based on these data, the quantity index calculated for agribusiness exports was positive at 4,5%.
“The increase in exports in the first half of 2024 reflects not only the excellence of our products, but also the result of record market openings and constant dialogue with other countries. Government encouragement and support from the sector and associations have been fundamental to this growth, demonstrating the strength and competitiveness of Brazilian agribusiness on the international stage, as well as the quality and strict sanitary control of our products”, highlighted Roberto Perosa, Secretary of Commerce and International Relations of the Ministry of Agriculture
In the accumulated period of the last 12 months, agribusiness exports totaled US$ 166,20 billion, which represented growth of 2,4% in relation to the immediately previous twelve months. Between July 2023 and June 2024, agribusiness products represented 48,6% of all Brazilian exports, 0,2 percentage points above the share seen between July 2022 and June 2023.
In the first half of 2024, Brazilian agribusiness exports reached a value of US$82,39 billion. This is the second highest value recorded for the historical series.
During this period, the five main sectors of Brazilian agribusiness stood out significantly in exports. The soybean complex led, reaching US$33,53 billion, representing 40,7% of the total exported by agribusiness. Next, the meat sector exported US$11,81 billion, equivalent to 14,3% of agribusiness exports. The sugar and alcohol complex registered US$ 9,22 billion, corresponding to 11,2% of the total, while forestry products totaled US$ 8,34 billion, representing 10,1%. Finally, the coffee sector reached US$5,31 billion, which is equivalent to 6,4% of exports. Together, these sectors were responsible for 82,8% of Brazilian agribusiness's foreign sales.
The meat sector, the second largest exporter, showed growth of 1,6% compared to 2023, reaching US$11,81 billion. Beef stood out, representing 48,1% of the exported value, with US$5,14 billion, an increase of 18,3%. The quantity of fresh beef exported was a record, totaling 1,14 million tons, an increase of 29,1%.
The sugar and alcohol complex saw its exports increase from US$5,99 billion in 2023 to US$9,22 billion in 2024, a growth of 54,1%. Sugar, the sector's main product, reached US$8,66 billion, an increase of 62,8%. Exports of raw cane sugar were also records, both in value, with US$7,21 billion, and in quantity, with 14,33 million tons.
Forest products registered growth of 11,9%, totaling US$8,34 billion. Cellulose was responsible for 59,6% of this total, with US$4,97 billion, an increase of 19,5%. The amount of cellulose exported also reached a record for the first half of the year, with almost 10 million tons, an increase of 3,1%.
The coffee sector stood out with foreign sales of US$5,31 billion, a growth of 46,1% in value and 52,1% in quantity compared to the previous year.
In addition to these, other products also showed notable performances. Uncarded and uncombed cotton reached a record US$2,68 billion, an increase of 236%, with 1,39 million tons exported, a growth of 228%. Orange juice also broke a record, with US$1,25 billion in exports, an increase of 24%.
