Brazil should harvest 238,7 million tons of grains in the 2016/17 harvest

The National Supply Company (Conab) estimate for the 2016/17 grain harvest is 238,7 million tons. This represents a growth of 27,9% compared to the 2015/16 harvest, that is, 52,1 million tons. The planted area is 60,9 million hectares, an increase of 4,4% compared to the 2015/16 harvest.

The soybean harvest, the most produced grain in the country, reached 114 million tons. First harvest corn production is 30,46 million tons, an increase of 18,3% compared to the previous harvest. The second harvest of corn is nearing completion, with a total production estimate of 67,25 million tons.

 There was a 9,5% reduction in the wheat cultivated area. Production should reach 5,19 million tons. In Paraná, harvesting has begun and is covering around 2% of the area. In Rio Grande do Sul, crops are in transition from the vegetative phase (60%) to the reproductive phase (40%).

The weather conditions provide a good cotton harvest this year. The harvest is close to completion, with production of 1,53 million tons of lint and 2,3 million tons of seeds.

Rice benefited from favorable climatic conditions throughout the cycle. This resulted in production of 12,33 million tons.

The first harvest beans have a production of 1,36 million tons, of which 850,4 thousand tons of colored common beans, 319,5 thousand tons of black common beans and 190,7 thousand tons of cowpeas. In the second bean harvest, production reached 1,2 million tons, of which 575,8 thousand tons of colored common beans, 445 thousand tons of cowpeas and 180,2 thousand tons of black common beans.

 The harvest of the third bean crop is underway, with a forecast production of 836,3 thousand tons due to the increase in area (17,2%) and productivity (26%), of which 750,7 thousand tons of beans- common colors, 77,6 thousand tons of cowpeas and 7,9 thousand tons of black common beans.

Data on these products and other grains are in the 12th Survey of the 2016/2017 Grain Harvest, released this Tuesday (12) by Conab. The company has been monitoring the Brazilian grain harvest for 40 years. The methodology used involves fieldwork, technologies related to remote sensing, satellite positioning, geographic information systems and statistical, agrometeorological and spectral models.
