Brazil records 26% increase in coffee exports in July

Volume exported in 2024 reaches new record, with 28,1 million bags in the first September

Brazilian coffee exports totaled 3,774 million 60 kg bags in July this year, the first month of the 2024/25 harvest, a volume that implies an increase of 25,7% over the 3,002 million bags shipped in the same period in 2023. Revenue exchange rate was US$932,5 million, showing growth of 47,9% in the same comparative interval. The data is part of the monthly statistical report of the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé).

In July, canephora coffees (conilon + robusta) maintained the significant performance of the previous months by increasing 82,2% in the annual comparison and totaling 900.818 bags, the second highest volume for a month in history, behind only the 902.266 bags in November 2023 Arabica grew 13%, to 2,491 million bags; soluble, with 376.524 bags, grew 26%; and the roasted and roasted and ground segment shipped 5.552 bags, an increase of 47%.

Civil year 

From January to the end of July 2024, Brazilian coffee exports total 28,146 million bags, a record amount for the period and which represents an increase of 46,3% compared to the first seven months of last year and 18 % on the 23,852 million bags of the highest level so far, recorded in the first septime of 2021.

The performance is also the highest in history in the range in foreign exchange revenue. Foreign exchange inflows reached US$6,277 billion between January and July this year, which implies increases of 50% over the US$4,184 billion in the first seven months of 2023 and 19,5% compared to the previous record of US$ $5,252 billion, measured in the same range of 2022.

For the president of Cecafé, Brazilian exporters remain exemplary in meeting growing global demand, overcoming logistical challenges. “Delays and changes of scale on ships for coffee shipments remain intense. According to the Detention Zero Bulletin, prepared by ElloX Digital in partnership with Cecafé, 675 ships destined for the export of the product were delayed in the second quarter of 2024, or 56% of the 1.211 container ships handled in total from April to the end of June ”, he points out.

Coffee types

Arabica coffee, with 20,652 million bags sent abroad between January and July, continues to be the most exported by Brazil. This volume represents 73,4% of the total and implies an increase of 31,1% compared to the first September of last year. The canephora species, with 5,178 million bags and substantial growth of 313,7% compared to 2023, comes next, accounting for 18,4% of the total. The soluble coffee segment, with 2,290 million bags – an increase of 4,0% and 8,1% of the total – and the roasted and roasted and ground product section, with 25.634 bags (-9,2% and 0,1. XNUMX% representation), complete the list.

"Our conilon and Robusta coffees remain in the spotlight this year, occupying the spaces left by the lower supply of main competitors, such as Vietnam and Indonesia, and favored by the good 2023 harvest and the volumes already harvested this year. Thus, Brazilian canephoras They are even imported by Vietnamese and Indonesians", comments Márcio Ferreira, president of Cecafé.

main destinations

The 10 main coffee buyers in Brazil increased their purchases in the first seven months of 2024. The United States tops the ranking, importing 4,516 million bags, or 31,1% more compared to the first seven months of 2023, which is equivalent to 16 % of total exports.

Germany, with a representation of 14,3%, purchased 4,027 million bags (+77%) and occupies second place in the table. Closing the top 5 are Belgium, with the purchase of 2,711 million bags (+156,3%); Italy, with 2,218 million bags (+48,6%); and Japan, with 1,311 million bags (+6%).

Up to tenth place, the performances of Spain also stand out, sixth place in the ranking with imports of 929.055 bags, a volume that implies growth of 92,4% in relation to the period from January to July 2023; and the United Kingdom, in eighth place, which increased the purchase of Brazilian product by 97,2% by purchasing 831.607 bags in the first seven months of this year.

As the European Union Regulation for Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR) comes into force, starting January 1, 2025, it is worth highlighting the growth in shipments to this economic bloc, which accounts for 47,3% of all exports of coffees in Brazil. In the first seven months of 2024, we exported 13,305 million bags to the EU, or 64,9% more compared to the same period in 2023.

When the focus turns to shipments made to other producing countries, the following stand out: i) 1.468,2% to Ecuador, which imported 132.281 bags from January to July; ii) 576,1% to Vietnam, with 412.469 bags imported, 362.055 bags of conilon and Robusta only; iii) 429,2% to Mexico, with 539.001 bags; and iv) 33,1% for Indonesia, which purchased 102.025 bags.

Coffees that have superior quality or certified sustainable practices account for 18,5% of total Brazilian exports of the product from January to July 2024, with 5,220 million bags shipped abroad. This volume represents an increase of 66,2% compared to that recorded in the first seven months of 2023.

The average price of the product was US$ 246,00 per bag, generating foreign exchange revenue of US$ 1,284 billion, which corresponds to 20,5% of that obtained with total coffee shipments in the September. In the annual comparison, the value is 66% higher than that recorded in the same seven months last year.

In the ranking of the main destinations for differentiated coffees, between January and July 2024, the USA remains in first place, with the purchase of 1,236 million bags, equivalent to 23,7% of the total of this type of product exported.

Closing the top 5 are Germany, with 888.372 bags and a representation of 17%; Belgium, with 652.704 bags (12,5%); Netherlands (Netherlands), with 374.450 bags (7,2%); and the United Kingdom, with 210.980 bags (4%).

Ports

The Port of Santos remains the main exporter of coffee from Brazil in the first September of 2024, with the shipment of 19,327 million bags, which represents 68,7% of the total. Next comes the Rio de Janeiro maritime complex, which accounts for 28,2% of exports by sending 7,947 million bags abroad, and the Port of Paranaguá (PR), with the shipment of 217.249 bags and a representation of 0,8. XNUMX%.
