It was published this Thursday (04/05) the Joint Ordinance SDA/Mapa - Ibama - Anvisa nº 1/2023, which replaces Joint Normative Instruction No. 3/2006 in establishing procedures to be adopted for the registration of microbiological products used in pest control or as defoliants, desiccants, stimulators, growth inhibitors.

The new Joint Ordinance aims to adapt the legislation to innovations that have emerged in recent times, such as allowing the registration of inactivated microorganisms, which was previously only permitted for live microorganisms. The regulations also sought to reduce bureaucracy, as well as clarify several points about the registration procedure for this type of product.

By reducing bureaucracy, it will be possible to further speed up the registration process for products of microbiological origin and allow products to reach the market more quickly. The safety and effectiveness of products are rigorously evaluated before approval, in addition to ensuring the protection of public health and the environment.

Registration of biological products

Brazil has encouraged the registration of products of microbiological origin for pest control, which is gaining more and more space in Brazilian agricultural production. This can be demonstrated by the increasing number of registrations of products of biological origin in recent years. In 2023 alone, 15 low-impact products have already been registered, nine of which are authorized for organic agriculture.

“With this joint ordinance we hope that these numbers will increase even further, as the use of biological products can offer a more sustainable and safe alternative compared to chemical products”, highlights the head of the Formulated Product Registration Division, Tatiane Almeida.

According to the head of the Formulated Products Registration Division, “the expectation is that this new standard can further stimulate innovation and the development of new biological products for pest control”, which could be beneficial for the agricultural sector and for the environment as a whole.
