Brazil has just reached a historic milestone in fruit production: the first shipment of Hass avocados, better known as avocados, was officially exported to Chile. The shipment was carried out by the company Carlini Avocados, and represents a new chapter for the sector, which has grown rapidly in recent years.

The opening of the Chilean market to Brazilian avocados was only possible thanks to the joint work of the Brazilian Association of Fruit and Derivative Producers and Exporters (Abrafrutas) with the Ministry of Agriculture (Mapa) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), which worked hard to comply with the Andean country's phytosanitary and regulatory requirements.

High demand

Chile is recognized as the second largest per capita consumer of avocados in the world, behind only Mexico. According to data from the Chilean Palm Committee, in 2024, per capita consumption in the country reached 8,6 kg per person per year, exceeding the 8,2 kg recorded in 2023. This growth reflects the high domestic demand and the preference of Chileans for this fruit, which consolidates it as one of the main consumer markets for avocados globally.

In 2024, Brazil exported more than 24 thousand tons of avocados. In the first quarter of 2025, more than 6 thousand tons were sent abroad, which demonstrates growing interest in the national product.

The state of São Paulo is the main producer of avocados in Brazil, accounting for almost 45% of the national production. According to the Institute of Agricultural Economics (IEA – Apta), in 2023, the state produced 192 thousand tons of the fruit, an increase of 8,54% compared to the previous year. This volume puts São Paulo ahead of other producing states, such as Minas Gerais and Paraná.

“The shipment of avocados to Chile is a milestone. It is the result of a coordinated effort that proves Brazil’s ability to serve markets around the world,” says Eduardo Brandão, executive director of Abrafrutas.
