Coffee farming in Rondônia at the forefront of technology
Rondônia is today the fifth largest coffee producer in Brazil and the second in the production of canephora coffee
The Agricultural Policy Secretariat – SPA, of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply – Mapa, through the Coffee Statistical Report for the month of October 2016, highlights that 3,3 million bags of Brazilian Coffees were exported that month, the largest monthly volume this year. The foreign exchange revenue generated from these exports was around US$571 million, at an average price of US$171,47 per bag. And Gross Production Value estimates that the average gross revenue of coffee producers will be R$23,64 billion in 2016.
According to Coffee Statistical Report - October 2016, the volume of coffee exported from January to October this year was 27,8 million bags, which generated approximately US$4,3 billion in foreign exchange revenue. This amount represents 5,9% of total revenue from Brazilian agribusiness exports and places coffee in fifth place in the ranking of foreign exchange revenues obtained from exports of agribusiness products. First place went to the soybean complex – with US$24,2 billion; and, secondly, meat - with US$ 11,9 billion. The sugar and alcohol industry comes in third – with US$9 billion; and forestry products, in fourth – with US$8,4 billion. Brazilian agribusiness exports generated US$73,1 billion in this period.
When comparing the performance of this year's coffee sector exports with the same period in 2015 (January to October), the Report shows that there was a reduction of 8,7% in volume and 17,1% in foreign exchange revenue, which were 30,5 million bags and US$5,2 billion, respectively.
The Coffee Statistical Report, available on Coffee Observatory from the Café Research Consortium, coordinated by Embrapa Café, presents several analyzes of the sector, namely: Statistics on Coffee Producers and Importers (production, exports and world consumption); Cultivated area and Coffee Crop Financing Programs; Brazilian Coffee Production Performance Indicators - 2007 to 2016; Historical Series of National Coffee Production - 2001 to 2016; Brazilian Agribusiness Exports - Ranking of Main Products - Accumulated Comparison 2015 and 2016; among others.
Gross Production Value – VBP – SPA/Mapa also released the VBP of the month of October, which estimates that the average gross revenue of coffee producers will be R$23,64 billion in 2016. If we compare it with the 2015 harvest, whose VBP was calculated at R$20,67 billion, we will see that This year's 2016 harvest, if confirmed, will represent an increase in revenue of around 14%.
In this case, coffee will be the seventh product in the VBP ranking in 2016 and responsible for approximately 4,6% of the total VBP of the agricultural sector in Brazil, which, according to Mapa, should reach around R$ 519,3 billion this year . The first six agricultural products in the VBP ranking are: soybeans, with R$118 billion; cattle, R$74,4 billion; chicken, R$55 billion; sugar cane, R$52,3 billion; corn, R$40,5 billion; and milk, R$25,8 billion.
This study by SPA/Mapa also demonstrates the evolution of the performance of producers' average gross revenue in a historical series from 1997 to 2016, which is also available on the SPA/Mapa website. Map, which is worth checking out. In the specific case of coffee, the VBP is calculated based on the harvest's production using as a reference the average prices received by producers based on data from Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics - Cepea/Esalq/Usp .
