Use of biologicals reaches 36% of cultivated areas in 2024 and continues to grow in Brazil
Data was presented during the biological inputs event BioSummit 2024, which ends this Wednesday (29) in Campinas (SP)
The total area used in the cultivation of Cafés do Brasil, including the two species of coffee, the Coffea arabica (Arabica coffee) and Coffea canephora (robosa+conilon coffee), in the current coffee year 2024, was estimated at 2,25 million hectares. Of this total, estimates indicate that 1,9 million hectares are being used for crops in production, which correspond to approximately 85%, and, in addition, 344,61 thousand hectares are in the formation phase, which is equivalent to 15 % of the general total area. Data were compiled in the 2nd Survey of the 2024 Coffee Harvest, by the National Supply Company - Conab and analyzed by Embrapa Café.
When establishing a simple comparison of the total area of crops exclusively in production, at a national level, with each two species of coffee, it appears, in the case of C. arabica, whose total area was estimated at 1,53 million hectares, that this crop represents 80% of the national total. And, additionally, as the C. canephora had its production area calculated at 383,6 thousand hectares, it appears that the cultivation of this species corresponds to approximately 20% of the production area in the coffee year 2024.
With specific regard to coffees of the species C. arabica, this estimate indicates that the area occupied by this species at national level totals 1,83 million hectares, of which 1,53 million hectares (83%) are in production, and, in addition, that the 306,25 thousand hectares The remainder are in the formation phase, which are equivalent to 17% of the total area.
Conab carries out and publishes four coffee harvest estimates annually. In the first estimate, which was already released in January, data collected in December were presented, which portray the phases of defining crop productivity. In this second survey, in the month of May, Conab updated the information from the period in which the harvest began to advance in the country. In the third survey, scheduled to be released in September, the information is updated after the harvest.
In the fourth survey, which is carried out after the completion of the harvest, all harvest data will be consolidated and closed in December. However, it is worth highlighting that such forecasts are subject to corrections and adjustments throughout each survey carried out during the harvest year, given that more accurate and compelling information is only consolidated after the completion of each harvest.
Based on the 2nd Coffee Harvest Survey of 2024, it appears that the total harvest of Brazilian Coffees, including the sum of the harvest of the two species, is expected to reach the physical volume of 58,81 million 60kg bags processed, which, if these estimates are confirmed, will represent an additional 3,74 million bags in relation to the previous harvest, as well as an increase of 6,8% in relation to the same comparative basis, which is the 2023 coffee year.
Taking as reference obviously the Conab numbers on screen, such as the total harvest of C. arabica was calculated at 42,11 million bags of coffee, which correspond to 71,6% of the national physical volume to be harvested, this species will have an average productivity of 27,7 bags per hectare. And, more than that, as the harvest of C. canephora was estimated at 16,70 million bags, a volume that represents 28,4% of national production, this performance will constitute a very significant productivity of 43,6 bags per hectare, if such numbers are confirmed at the end of the 2024 coffee year.
