Bean sanitary void begins in September in Goiás

With the aim of reducing the damage caused by whiteflies in common bean crops, the sanitary void of the crop in Goiás begins in September. Established through Normative Instruction No. 05, of April 26, 2018, of the Goiana Defense Agency Agriculture (Agrodefense), the phytosanitary measure aims to guarantee the total absence of live bean plants in the field.

Rural producers in Goiás need to pay attention to the calendar, because the sanitary vacuum has different deadlines for compliance in the State, being divided into two regions (list at the end of the text). In the case of region 1, with 80 municipalities, the period will be from September 5th to October 5th. For those in region 2, which are 153 municipalities, the void will be from September 20th to October 20th. During the term, which is 30 days, all common bean plants, whether cultivated or voluntary, must be eliminated through chemical or mechanical control.

The president of Agrodefesa, José Ricardo Caixeta Ramos, emphasizes that the Agency is responsible for the official agricultural defense service in Goiás and has systematically adopted, since 2014, official measures established by normative acts, in order to minimize the socioeconomic impacts caused by pests. greater relevance to the bean production system, such as whiteflies. “We developed phytosanitary work to guarantee plant health and to avoid losses in production. Agrodefesa state inspectors are always in the field to guide the farmer and explain, through health education, the importance of following what is established by the normative instructions”, he informs.

Losses

Since the 1970s, whitefly has become probably the most devastating viral disease of common bean. The direct damage caused by the insect attack is caused by the suction of the plant's sap and the inoculation of toxins. Furthermore, part of the sap can be excreted in the form of a liquid that favors the growth of fungi that harm the plant's photosynthesis and respiration, thus causing changes that lead to a reduction in grain productivity and quality. But the main damage caused by the pest is indirect, through the transmission of viruses such as bean golden mosaic and carlavirus (Cowpea mild mottle virus).

Agrodefesa's Plant Health Manager, Daniela Rézio, reinforces that the whitefly, as an insect vector of the golden mosaic virus, can alter the vegetative and reproductive development of the bean plant. “The result of this is a drop in productivity and grain quality. Therefore, the need for the producer to adopt the phytosanitary measures necessary for the crop”.

New regulations

Agrodefesa and Embrapa Arroz e Feijão will carry out studies to serve as a scientific basis for a possible change in the bean fallow calendar in Goiás. The matter has already been discussed with representatives of the productive sector, such as the Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of Goiás ( Faeg), Association of Soybean Producers of the State of Goiás (Aprosoja Goiás) and Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa).

“Some municipalities in Goiás have no history of problems with whiteflies. Therefore, we intend to prepare a study and propose changing the period of the sanitary void. But due to a current federal regulatory instruction, it will not be possible to change this calendar for this year, because it is necessary to follow bureaucratic procedures and the deadline is not enough for 2023. This will probably happen next year”, says the state coordinator of Prevention and Agrodefesa Pest Control, Mário Sérgio de Oliveira.
