Banana irrigation is the topic of a new distance learning course from Embrapa

Free and Online, the course “Banana irrigation: water needs of the crop” is now available on the platform e-Campo, the distance training showcase of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation – Embrapa. With content offered by Embrapa Mandioca e Fruticultura (Cruz das Almas, BA), the training lasts 12 hours and is taught by researcher Eugênio Ferreira Coelho, PhD in irrigation engineering.

The training is aimed especially at agricultural technicians and rural producers from all states in Brazil, an estimate of approximately 1.500 people, who will receive updated information on banana irrigation, which is a highly water-demanding crop. The need can vary from 8 thousand to 15 thousand m3 of water/cycle, depending on the variety and climatic conditions of the location. 

At the end of the course, participants should be able to determine the rational daily amount of water for the crop in the different phases of its cycle, in order to optimize the efficiency of water use in irrigation. The course consists of two modules: Theoretical foundation and Technological resources available for determining the water needs of banana plants.

Self-instructional, the course displays content without tutoring and in video classes, presentations and books saved in PDF and complementary material available on left-wing. There will be a learning assessment (objective multiple-choice questions), which must be completed after completing the classes and reading the supplementary material.

This is the second course Online that Embrapa Cassava and Fruticulture offers through the e-Campo platform and is linked to the first, "Irrigation methods and systems for banana trees" – also taught by Eugenio Coelho –, available since December 2020. A third will be offered in 2022.
