The area used for wheat cultivation in Paraná is expected to fall to 850 hectares in 2025, according to the Department of Rural Economy (Deral) of the State Department of Agriculture. The expected reduction is 25% compared to the 1,13 million hectares harvested last year. The decline reflects producers' discouragement in the face of rising costs, especially with fertilizers.

The main fertilizers used in the crop have increased in price by 22% in the last 12 months, according to Deral technicians. This caused an 8% increase in variable costs, which went from R$67,41 to R$72,87 per bag. The increase was partially offset by the fall in the prices of seeds and pesticides, but not enough to recover profitability.

In May, a bag of wheat was sold for R$79,69 in Paraná. The price remained stable compared to April and 15% higher than that recorded in May 2024 (R$68,83). Even so, the price does not easily cover costs, which contributes to the decline in the cultivated area.

By the end of May, 78% of the planned area had already been planted. The crops are in good field condition. Recent rains have especially benefited regions such as Norte Pioneiro and Campos Gerais, where humidity was still limited.

The production potential remains high, with expectations of up to 130 bags per bushel. Soil moisture also favors germination in areas not yet planted.
