The Brazilian Coffee harvest estimated for the current year of 2022 totals a physical volume equivalent to 53,42 million 60kg bags. Of this total, 35,71 million bags are of the Arabica coffee species, which represents around 66,84% of the harvest, and 17,71 million bags of the conilon species, which correspond to 33,15%. If this estimate is confirmed in the next surveys, the 2022 harvest will see a significant increase of 11,96% in national coffee production, if such numbers are compared with previous production, in which the country harvested a total volume of 47,71 million of bags.
In this same context, it should be noted that coffee production, exclusively of the Arabica species, in 2022, will have an increase of 13,6% in volume, compared to the previous harvest. As for the production of conilon coffee, on the other hand, the numbers collected for the 2022 harvest indicate an increase in the harvest of 8,7%, compared to the previous coffee year.
In relation to the total area cultivated, in all producing regions, with both Arabica and conilon coffees, in the year covered by this analysis, the surveys carried out estimate an increase of 1,9% in relation to the previous harvest, totaling 2,24 million hectares, of which 81% are dedicated to the cultivation of Arabica coffee, and 19% to the production of conilon coffee. And, regarding the area exclusively in production, the researched data indicates an area of 1,84 million hectares, which will be 1,8% larger than in 2021. And, in addition, the area in formation will occupy 401,2 thousand hectares in 2022, which also represents an increase of 2,5% compared to last season.
The main source of statistical data that is allowing this analysis to be carried out was obtained from Monitoring the Brazilian Coffee Harvest – Second Survey – May 2022, from the National Supply Company – Conab, which is available in full at the Coffee Observatory, of the Café Research Consortium, coordinated by Embrapa Café. Conab carries out and publishes four surveys annually. The first in December, with release in January. The second in April, with release in May. The third in August and released in September. The fourth is carried out in November and released in December, when all data is consolidated.
According to data from this Conab Survey, which is available in full on Coffee Observatory, from the Consórcio Pesquisa Café coordinated by Embrapa Café, the six largest coffee producing states in the Federation are: Minas Gerais, the largest national producer, which expects to harvest 24,79 million bags of processed coffee this harvest; Espírito Santo – 16,45 million bags; São Paulo – 4,43 million; Bahia – 3,64 million; Rondônia – 2,64 million bags; and finally, the state of Paraná, in sixth place, with 552,9 thousand 60kg bags.
O Conab report also highlights that: “The positive biennial effect expected for this harvest occurred timidly in the current harvest. The weather conditions, recorded between June and September 2021, were decisive for this break in expectations. Severe water deficit and occasional frosts were responsible for reducing the productive potential of coffee crops in most producing regions. The good flowering recorded in September and October, at the beginning of the rains, did not result in good fruit setting. Even the good rainfall that occurred from October onwards, and which continued until March 2022, managed to reverse this situation”.
