Agriculture grew 0,7% in the third quarter of this year, according to GDP (Gross Domestic Product) data released by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, which increased by 0,8%. Industry increased by 0,4 % and Services, 0,5%. R$61,9 billion were generated by the agro sector, R$331,6 billion by Industry, and R$1,1 trillion by Services.
Comparing the quarter to the same period last year, GDP growth was 1,3%, with Agriculture growing 2,5%, Industry 0,8% and Services 1,2%. It was the best result this year for agribusiness, notes José Garcia Gasques, General Coordinator of Studies and Analysis at the Agricultural Policy Secretariat (SPA) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply.
According to IBGE, the increase is mainly due to crops that have a relevant harvest in the third quarter and the productivity reflected in the relationship between production and planted area. The production and productivity performance of important crops such as coffee and cotton surpassed the weak performance of the production of crops such as sugar cane, cassava, oranges and corn, said Gasques. The IBGE highlighted that gains in livestock and forestry production contributed positively to the quarter's results.
The accumulated result from January to September indicates GDP growth of 1,1%, Agriculture (-0,3%), Industry (0,9%) and Services (1,4%). The negative rate for Agriculture is due to the worst performance this year, of crops with great importance in generating the sector's income, such as sugar cane, rice, beans, oranges, cassava, corn and grapes, highlighted the coordinator.
The IBGE updated for the period 2000 to 2017, through the review of the National Accounts, the sectoral distribution of the activities that make up the GDP, standing at 5,4%, Agriculture, Industry, with 21,3% and, Services, 73,3, XNUMX%.
