Agribusiness in Goiás employed more than 1 million people in 2023, reaching the highest level in the last 11 years, according to the first bulletin on the Agribusiness Labor Market in Goiás, published by the Mauro Borges Institute (IMB), under the jurisdiction of the Secretariat -General of Government (SGG). The data refers to the evolution of the sector in the state between 2012 and 2023. The analysis shows that the sector is one of the determinants for maintaining economic growth in Goiás.
The value corresponds to 26,6% of the total number of people employed in the state and shows a growth of 2,4% compared to the year 2022. The inclusion in the workforce in agribusiness in Goiás between 2012 and 2023 was 95.446 people, which is equivalent to a 10,5% increase in employees in the sector. In the third quarter of 2023, agricultural production alone represented 15,1% of the economy of the state of Goiás. Furthermore, in the same year, exports that integrate agriculture were responsible for 96,7% of the state's export volume.
The manager of Environmental Studies and Agribusiness, Érica Basílio Tavares Ramos, talks about the importance of publishing the new IMB bulletin. “This is an unprecedented and extremely relevant publication, as it can be used as a guide for the formulation of public policies aimed at the sector’s labor market in the state”, she highlighted.
“In Goiás, our agricultural vocation is evident. We work tirelessly to boost employment and income through policies such as the Food Acquisition Program (PAA), the Vão do Paranã Irrigated Fruit Farming Project and Social Credit. Agribusiness is not only socially important, it also boosts our economy. We are committed to maintaining an environment conducive to the development of the sector, recognizing its vital importance for the prosperity of the state.”, highlighted Pedro Leonardo Rezende, Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Seapa).
Agribusiness is divided into three main levels, being primary (which includes rural producers, farmers and ranchers); secondary (which includes agro-industries and input producers); and tertiary (which includes the distribution, trade and services chain). The tertiary sector, with emphasis on services, is the one that employs the most, with 38,4% of agribusiness jobs in this segment. Between 2012 and 2023, the services sector saw an increase of 100.750 employed people, which corresponds to an increase of 35,3%. In second place are jobs in the primary sector, which correspond to 26,1%.
The growing innovation and technological development in the primary agribusiness segment in Goiás made it possible for, in 2023, the usual average monthly income to exceed the income of other segments and reach the mark of R$ 4.617,27, with an increase of 53,9% since 2012. The growth was higher than the general average monthly income of all segments of Goiás agribusiness, which increased by just 16,6% between 2012 and 2023.
Agribusiness in Goiás is predominantly made up of men (679.188), who occupied 66,2% of vacancies in 2023, while women (326.013) occupied around a third of vacancies in the sector. Furthermore, it is worth highlighting that since 2012, the female workforce has seen an increase of 56.284 women in the agribusiness job market in Goiás.
