May saw new growth in agribusiness exports. Compared to the same period in 2022, there was a 23% increase in value, from US$998 million to US$1,2 billion. In volume, there were 1,7 million tons, an increase of 27%. Only soybeans in grain were 596 thousand tons, an increase of 258%, the highest volume recorded since October 2022. Of the total shipped in Rio Grande do Sul last month, 89% came from the sector. In relation to the month of April 2023, the increase was 17% in value and 7% in volume. The data was released by Farsul, this Tuesday (13/6).

In the first five months of 2023, agribusiness in Rio Grande do Sul reached US$5,8 billion, a value 5% higher than that exported in the same period of 2022. In relation to volume, the movement was downward, remaining at 8,5 million tons, decline of 3%. The analysis by Farsul's economic consultancy points to a recovery in beef exports after the atypical episode of Mad Cow disease. In the comparison between April and May, growth was 83% in value and 55% in volume.

The growth in soybean shipments is related to the flow of production from other states through the port of Rio Grande due to the operations in Paranaguá and Santos being at their limit. The product from Rio Grande do Sul remains at low levels due to two consecutive droughts that resulted in a reduction in stocks that are directed to the domestic market.

Rice exports are booming with increases of 535% in exported value and 558% in volume. The main destinations are Mexico and Costa Rica. Wheat, on the other hand, has seen a drop in sales due to the strong international supply with very aggressive prices, taking away the competitiveness of the national grain.

In imports, the group Fertilizers (fertilizers) and their ingredients went from US$ 389 million in May 2022 to US$ 268 million in the same period in 2023. In volume, the record increased from 480 thousand tons to 606 thousand tons. This represents a 31% drop in value and a 26% increase in volume.

Exports to Asia (excluding the Middle East) totaled US$604 million and 939 thousand tons. Europe reached US$220 million, of which US$183 million went to the European Union. Next we have the Middle East with US$58 million, North America with US$129 million, South America with US$133 million, Africa with US$52 million, Oceania with US$11 million and Central America and the Caribbean with US$ $23 million.

As for countries, China appears in first place with US$351 million and a 28% share in value. In second place we have the United States with 6,7%, Thailand with 5,5%, Argentina with 4,9% and India with 4,8%. Excluding China, 325 thousand tons of products were exported to the Asian continent. This volume is 34% greater than that shipped to the European Union. Highlights include Thailand (134 thousand tons), Vietnam (89 thousand tons) and India (57 thousand tons).
