96% of soy produced in Pará meets the socio-environmental criteria of the Green Protocol

With the accession of new signatories in the last harvest year, approximately 3,2 million tons of soybeans, around 96% of the state's production, are in compliance with the strict socio-environmental requirements required by the Pará Green Grains Protocol.

This is an agreement signed in 2014 between the State Government, municipalities, associations and companies in the grain chain and the Federal Public Ministry with the aim of ensuring the commitment of the productive sector not to sell products originating from illegally deforested areas, with environmental embargo, not registered or irregular in the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR), with occurrence of slave labor or cultivated in overlap with conservation units and indigenous lands.

Given its importance for the development of agricultural activities in line with the preservation of natural resources in the Amazon Biome, the Green Protocol for Grãos do Pará has just gained a new website. For Bernardo Pires, sustainability manager at the Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries (ABIOVE), one of the entities of the Protocol Management Committee, the new website was created to be an important transparency tool for the main Environmental Pact for the Pará Grain Chain .

“An initiative as relevant as the Pará Green Grains Protocol needed a platform for easy access to information and materials. People need to know which companies are committed to socio-environmental responsibility and the safe marketing of agricultural products of legal origin, how the auditing of this process works and, most importantly, how to be part of it”, comments Bernardo.

Also according to the ABIOVE executive, “the Green Protocol for Grãos do Pará is a successful example of how a public-private environmental governance initiative contributes efficiently to sustainability in the grain supply chain, in production processes and, consequently, , strengthening the image of Brazilian agribusiness”.
