The official opening of the 37th Brazilian Nematology Congress will be a shot in the arm for delegates. The inaugural conference “Science, Technology and Innovation in the Era of Knowledge”, which will be given by the director of new business research at the Jacto Group, Tsen Chung Kang, promises to awaken scientists' interest in the Innovation Law, created in 2017, which regulates how public sector researchers can form partnerships with private companies, promoting research projects.

According to Kang, all major research institutions in Brazil are adapting and forming these public-private partnerships. “The most interesting thing is that up to 50% of the royalties paid by private companies to public institutions can go to the research team. So, they now have a path to better remuneration, because they can not only get resources to carry out the research, but to participate in the results. Many scientists are unaware of this”, explains the speaker, who will show some examples that are already happening in Brazil, such as at Embrapa, IAC, ITAL, IB and other institutions, which are managing to transform papers into invoices.

The Congress will open on August 1st at 18 pm, at the Hotel JP, in Ribeirão Preto (SP). The conference will start at 18:30 pm. In-person places are already sold out, but interested parties can register on the website https://www.37cbn.com.br/ to watch the event online.

Nematology

Kang adds that he will present the opportunities that currently exist in the area of nematology. “One of the most important things happening in this sector is the transition from chemical farming to organic farming. And nematology is one of the areas that has the greatest potential for the development of biological products,” he says.

Nematodes are among the main challenges facing Brazilian agriculture, causing estimated losses of R$36 billion annually, according to the Brazilian Society of Nematology. According to Kang, there is a need for more researchers studying nematodes, and especially the species that are good, as there are not only bad species that suck the plant. “The good ones can be used to increase productivity or to combat a fungus or other pest. That's why we have to encourage these researchers to transform their research into products to be used in agriculture. We will bring several examples of how this is happening in the world and how this has to happen in Brazil. The challenge is to transform some species of nematodes into biological weapons in favor of agriculture”, concludes the director of the Jacto Group.

According to Kang, Brazil currently produces more than 2% of all papers in the world and is in 13th place in paper publication. Specifically in relation to papers in the agricultural area, the country is in third position, behind only China and the United States. And in relation to scientific production of tropical agriculture, Brazil is number 1.

With the theme Nematodes: Science, Technology and Innovation, the 37th Brazilian Nematology Congress 2022 takes place from August 1st to 4th. The objective is to promote the meeting and interaction of teachers, researchers, technicians, farmers, consultants and students linked to Agricultural Nematology, as well as disseminate information, knowledge and experiences, around the challenges and strategic solutions for the management of plant parasitic nematodes .

During the four days, topics related to innovations in the chemical and biological control of nematodes, precision and digital agriculture, technologies for irrigated and rainfed crops, grains, sugarcane, coffee trees, fruit trees, vegetables, among other topics, will be discussed. In total there will be around 40 lectures, round tables and the presentation of 212 scientific works, totaling more than 50 activities.

"In this edition, we will focus the discussion around the challenges and strategic solutions for the management of plant parasitic nematodes, in addition to promoting meetings and interaction between participants", anticipates the president of the Organizing Committee of the 37th CBN, professor and consultant Pedro Soares, from Unesp - Jaboticabal Campus.
