Grain crops will be the highlight of agriculture in the coming days, from February 16th to 18th, at the Terras Baixas Experimental Station in Capão do Leão/RS.

Federarroz together with Embrapa Clima Temperado, with the support of IRGA, will be welcoming visitors from more than 200 rice-producing regions in the state of Rio Grande do Sul to learn about the latest technologies for the sector at the 32nd Official Opening of the Rice and Grain Harvest of Lowlands. The event continues in this edition in a hybrid format, respecting the health requirements to face and combat Covid-19.

The 32nd edition's central theme is Food Production in the Post-Pandemic - New Levels, New Challenges. During the three days, always in the morning, Federarroz, Embrapa and Irga will promote guided tours, from 7:30 am to 13 pm; and in the afternoons, free visits to technology showcases, from 8am to 16pm. Around 40 exhibitors will be shown in this edition next to the technological showcases. Caravans of producers from the State have already confirmed their presence at the event.

Programming and topics covered

In this edition, lectures, panels and seminars are organized in the Frederico Costa Auditorium whose topics will be Food Demand and the Rice of the Future, Economic Scenarios and Market Perspectives, Environmental Sustainability of Crops, Technologies and innovation in rural properties and Crop-Livestock Integration (ILP ).

Harvest Opening Farm

The solemn act of official opening of the rice harvest in the State will take place on February 18th, at 14 pm, with the presence of authorities and leaders from Rio Grande do Sul and Brazilian rice farming. The edition prepares a harvesting area in a different location, very close to the visitor entrance, where the Embrapa cultivar, BRS Pampa CL, is planted, which highlights the participation of BRS as reference grains to be harvested during the official event. BRS Pampa CL shares the crop with the IRGA 431 CL cultivar, which will also be harvested at the opening ceremony.

Special events

As tradition, on the first day of this edition, the Rice Sector Chamber Meeting will resume, starting at 10 am, in the Frederico Costa auditorium and, still preceding the event, on the 15th, the Latin American Rice Fund Meeting will begin. (FLAR), which will take place in parallel, in Pelotas, with the participation of representatives from 30 foreign countries, who will extend their Meeting activities by visiting the 32nd Harvest Opening on the 17th and 18th of February.

Embrapa stand

The Company's institutional stand will present, in addition to technical material on lowland grain crops, a program, with the in-person and online participation of several research units from other States. The themes in focus will be Climate Change, Crop Diversification, Plant Health and Technologies for Drainage and Irrigation for Grain Culture.

ILP showcases

Embrapa restructured the ILP Showcases, defining plots of forage species of BRS cultivars, annual and perennial, to demonstrate their use in succession or overseeding, in grazing or as preserved forage and in integrated crop-livestock ILP systems. The forage collection developed by agricultural research will be on display.

Corn and sorghum crops are highlighted in space as grain and forage production options in ILP. The wide-based ridge-furrow technology for corn and sorghum will be in evidence as a drainage alternative in production in lowland systems and examples of beef cattle will be managed on site. This space will have access next to the Frederico Costa Auditorium. This same area will be part of the Permanent Technological Showcase of the Experimental Station's technologies for use in other events and research actions throughout the year.

Event releases and news

At the event, Embrapa launches the new irrigated rice cultivar BRS A705, which has a short cycle, is more resistant to lodging and requires less water, and also the Embrapa Clima Temperado Technologies Catalog. The moment will feature the signing of technical cooperation protocols between Embrapa and partners. The activity will take place on the 18th, at 11 am, preceding the solemn Harvest Opening ceremony by the authorities.
