Court bans use of herbicide 2,4-D in Campanha Gaúcha
Decision vetoes application of the product throughout the region
Summer crops are beginning to fill Paraná's fields. Among those highlighted in the Weekly Agricultural Situation Bulletin, prepared by the Department of Rural Economy, are corn and potatoes. Soybean planting is still in its infancy, with emerging crops permitted only in Region 2, which encompasses the North, Northwest, Central-West, and West regions. In the other regions, the sanitary drought is in effect, and planting should be permitted throughout the month.
Favorable weather conditions have enabled the first 2025/26 corn harvest to advance. Approximately 29 hectares have been planted so far, corresponding to 9% of the 314 hectares projected for the harvest. The Ponta Grossa region, which accounts for approximately 23% of the total area, or 72,2 hectares, is the main corn producer this season, with the majority of plantings, totaling 21 hectares.
The second largest corn region is Guarapuava, which accounts for 15% of the state's estimated total, representing approximately 47,6 hectares. The forecast is to harvest 3,2 million tons in this first crop year.
The first potato crop is also in the field, with planting completed on 3,5 hectares (22%) of the total 16,3 hectares estimated for the season. The planting rate is lower than last year's average, when 35% of the crop was planted. Soil tenacity due to the dry weather has slowed activity.
The main producing regions are Curitiba, which accounts for 39% of the total; Guarapuava, 23%; and Ponta Grossa, 13%. The forecast is to harvest 517,1 tons in this first harvest. If the volume is confirmed, it will be an 11% reduction compared to the 584,2 tons harvested in 2024.
The report also shows that tobacco growers expect the crop to cover 85,3 hectares, which would be the largest area ever planted in the state. An important source of income for small farms, especially in southeastern Paraná, the harvest is estimated at 217,5 tons, which would surpass the record set last year, at 195,1 tons.
