In 2024, the average temperature was 25,02°C, 0,79°C above the historical average of 1991/2020, which is 24,23°C. In 2023, the annual average was 24,92°C, 0,69°C above the historical average.
Figure 1 shows the hottest years in the country.
It is important to highlight that the highlighted years were under the influence of the El Niño phenomenon, with intensity ranging from strong to very strong, as well as in 2023 and the first months of 2024.
After analyzing the deviations in Brazil's average annual temperatures from 1961 to 2024, Inmet found a statistically significant trend of increasing temperatures over the years (dashed line in Figure 2), which may be associated with climate change resulting from rising global temperatures and local environmental changes.
According to the provisional version of the Global State of the Climate 2024, published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on November 11, 2024, the global average surface temperature was 1,54°C above the historical average of 1850/1900, until September last year.
With this value, 2024 is likely to surpass the global average temperature of 2023, the warmest year yet. For 16 consecutive months (June 2023 to September 2024), the global average temperature likely exceeded any previous record, according to the consolidated analysis of WMO datasets.
