Strategic broccoli cultivation reduces field losses
The second-crop corn harvest has progressed rapidly in Paraná and is now practically complete in part of the state. Rain and winds in late July caused lodging in some crops, already weakened by previous frosts. Even so, average yields are expected to exceed 6.000 kg/ha in some regions. This is according to the Weather and Crop Conditions Bulletin for the week of July 29 to August 4, released today (August 5) by the Paraná Department of Rural Economy (Deral).
Winter crops benefited from the recent rains, after facing water stress throughout July. wheat, which is mostly in the flowering and fruiting stages, is developing well in most regions. barley follows similar conditions, with crops in stages ranging from stem elongation to fruiting. In oatmeal, medium-intensity frosts hit areas in the reproductive phase and should result in productivity losses.
the harvest of café is also nearing completion. In several regions of the state, more than 90% of the planted area has already been harvested. The dry weather has favored the pace of work, and, despite localized losses in areas harvested late, the overall quality of the product remains satisfactory, with yields within expectations.
In the case of sugar cane, the harvest has progressed with the support of stable weather conditions, and productivity remains within expectations.
Producers of potato have already begun preparing the soil for the next harvest. In some areas, including those outside the agricultural zoning zone, planting has already begun. The movement is also observed among producers of bean, which begin preparation for early planting.
The works with chips are continuing on two fronts: expanding planting and harvesting in established areas. Despite falling prices, Deral predicts an increase in the cultivated area for the 2025/26 harvest.
In the cultivation of tobacco, producers continue with cultural treatments, seedling preparation, coverage and desiccation of areas intended for planting.
the harvest of strawberry remains intense, especially in the North and Northwest regions. However, recent frosts have affected flowering and caused temporary losses in production in some crops.
As pastures were also impacted by frost and low temperatures, reducing the biomass supply. As a result, many ranchers anticipated the sale of cattle to avoid nutritional losses. Despite this, the report indicates the first signs of regrowth in some areas, which may contribute to the resumption of herd feeding.
