The seventh survey by Datagro Consulting for the 2019/20 harvest in Brazil brings a slight reduction in soybean production with the harvest already virtually over in the country, totaling 121,26 million tons. At the same time, the corn harvest had its production estimate increased compared to the last survey, totaling a potential of 102,18 million tons in the two Brazilian harvests.

The potential production of 121,26 million tons of the soybean crop represents a slight reduction compared to the 121,92 million tons in the last estimate. Even so, this volume should represent an increase of 2% compared to last year's harvest (119,19 million tons). The planted area jumped to 36,92 million hectares, an increase of 3% compared to the area of 35,92 million ha in 2018/19, but the average yield fell from 3.306 kg/ha since the previous estimate to 3.289 kg/ha .

Datagro's Grain Coordinator, Flávio Roberto de França Junior, highlights that the weather conditions for the development of the harvest were slightly worse than those recorded in the last harvest, with a loss in average productivity in 5 of the 15 main producing states. Highlight is the significant loss due to the lack of rain in the third largest producing state, which is normally Rio Grande do Sul, in addition to Santa Catarina.

The 2019/20 corn harvest in Brazil had an upward production review by Datagro compared to the last survey, with production potential in the two harvests of 102,18 million tons across the country, compared to 101,93 million tons in the last survey , and just above last harvest's record of 102,08 million tons. The area is forecast to be 18,39 million ha, 4% above the 17,66 million ha last year.

“Despite the irregularity of rainfall and losses in the South region, the first corn harvest had its production potential revised and reduced since April to 25,60 million tons, now 2% lower than the 26,08 million tons of the last harvest. This is due to the improvement in numbers in the North/Northeast region”, states França.

The corn area in the 1st harvest had a slight downward revision, to 4,40 million hectares, compared to 4,42 million hectares in the last survey. Productivity was estimated at 5.815 kg/ha compared to a previous forecast of 5.823 kg/ha. The summer corn harvest is also on its way to completion, with 97,9% of the area harvested in the Center-South region of Brazil by April 24th.

“For the 2020 winter harvest, we had the total area in Brazil revised to 13,99 million ha, 4% higher than the 13,39 million ha last year”, highlights França. The 2nd harvest has an estimated production of 76,58 million tons compared to 76,21 million tons in the previous survey. The estimated productivity is 5.473 kg/ha compared to 5.478 kg/ha last month. But here we still have great uncertainties due to the drought that affects Paraná, the Southeast region and part of the Central-West region, already with losses in productive potential. And where urgent rains are needed to prevent the damage from worsening.
