Biological inputs gain space in the agro-industrial sector through seed treatment

With the agricultural sector increasingly concerned about the safety of producers and the environment, industrial seed treatment with biological inoculants has gained favor among farmers, as it provides safe and profitable production. The biological solutions sector for agriculture is in a phase of exponential growth. According to CropLife Brasil, the biological products industry had revenues of R$2021 billion in 1,56 alone, a growth of over 35% compared to 2020. By 2025, a growth rate of around 35% is estimated. %. But, how does the production of a biological input on an industrial scale work and what are its benefits?

One of the most common methods in seed treatment (chemical + biological) is application by batch machines. In this process, there is a lot of embedded technology, where it is possible to add products independently and with the exact dose per kilogram of seeds. The first application is generally made with agricultural pesticides that are used to prevent pests and diseases, then the polymer is applied to homogenize and protect the next layer of biologicals, so it is possible to create a protective layer without harming living organisms. . 

Novozymes was a pioneer and is a reference in biological technologies for the treatment of industrial seeds. A clear example of this is the long-life inoculant that gains more and more farmer trust every day, due to the technology itself and the ease of opening and planting directly. Today, Novozymes provides two types of technology for the best sowing plants: peat technology aimed at more tropical regions, which is the case of the cerrado, and liquid technology for the south of the country. Reaching this level of technology was only possible thanks to a series of field and laboratory tests that were developed to maintain the life of beneficial bacteria that help farmers produce more and better. In an industrial treatment process, the last step is the insertion of a high-tech protector that provides both physical and osmotic protection, which prevents the death of bacteria.

Opting for industrial treatment offers several advantages over on-farm treatment. One of these advantages is savings, as the producer can place the correct amount of product per seed. A bag of soybeans, for example, contains up to 200 seeds. With the industrial system, it is possible to place the correct amount of each product in each seed, which generates an accuracy greater than 95%.

When the seed begins to become a plant and form rootlets, Bradyrhizobium (bacteria inserted into the seed industrially) begins symbiosis with the plant. The microorganisms, in turn, signal to the plants that they are beneficial, communicating that if the soybeans provide nutrients, the bacteria will provide them with nitrogen, as they have the power to capture nitrogen from the air and fix it in the plant.

To check whether the inoculant in the seed was correctly applied, the producer needs to collect some plants and check the vigor of the nodulation in the roots. The greater the size, number and proximity to the main root, the better the nitrogen supply match of the plant and consequently the greater the productive potential.
