The treatment of Seeds (TS) is one of the main components of efficient pest management and illnesses. It has a relatively low cost and reduced environmental impact, as the area that receives the product is small compared to the application of agrochemicals in aerial part. According to Yorinori (1977), around 75 pathogens can be transmitted by soybean seeds, with fungi being the main organisms pathogenic (Fiss et al..
In addition to benefit of TS in controlling pathogens associated with the seed coat, After sowing, numerous intraspecific interactions begin to occur. With the availability of moisture in the soil, the products contained in the TS begin to be solubilized, forming a protective layer around the seed, delaying and preventing the development of pathogens in this initial phase of the plant.
At this moment it is It is important to have a diagnosis of the area in addition to knowing the type of soil and the water availability after sowing. Sandy soils may have lower residual seed protection than more clayey soils, especially when subjected to intense rain after sowing. This is because leaching of the products contained in the TS will be more intense in soils with more macroporosity expressive, as in sandy ones. That's why it's important to look for a high TS quality, where the formulation and active ingredients may have chemical properties which enable its greater retention in the radicle tissues and less solubility, such as pyraclostrobin. This will reduce the possibility of leaching and early loss of control.
Some works showed that even in the absence or at low levels of harmful organisms, the seed treatment has improved crop establishment, with maintenance of plant vigor, having a positive impact on yield of grains.
In addition to benefit of seed treatment in protecting against pests and diseases, some studies show effects on physiological parameters of plants. Changes in physiology under the effects of the application of insecticides on seeds are already well documented (Tavares et al., 2007; Castro et al., 2008). However, for fungicides, research evaluating the application in aerial parts, such as strobilurins and carboxamides (Grossmann & Retzlaff, 1997; Grossmann et al., 1999; Nason et al., 2007; Fagan, 2007; Wu & Tiedemann, 2002; Jones & Bryson, 1998); and rare are for evaluating the effects of these compounds applied to seeds, with only for soybean cultivation (Silva et al., 2009A; Silva et al. 2009b).
Lately it has been observed by Madalosso et al. (2020) the benefit of TS in disease management roots and also increases in control of fungicides applied to the aerial view of soybeans. The authors have noticed that the use of TS reduces significantly reduce the incidence of difficult-to-control root diseases, as Macrophomina spp., Fusarium spp. And Phomopsis spp., resulting in productive increases of up to 2,7 sc/ha.
Still at this point, it has been observed that the use of TS has significantly benefited application controls leaves in soybean. This is due to the reduction of the initial inoculum of the fungi necrotrophic and better establishment of the root system of the plant that will receive the fungicides on its leaves.

About some features of Standak® Top, Edson Luiz de Almeida Baptista Sentinello, senior product and market development agronomist at BASF, provides some clarifications...
What are the Standak® Top’s differences in relation to competing products on the market?
We can mention its control spectrum, which covers the main soil pests and diseases. Also the low volume of syrup and the practicality of use. The triple mix with fipronil, methyl thiophanate and pyraclostrobin offers a solid basis for initial crop management and ease of operation. That for both industrial and on-farm treatment. Furthermore, is selective, provides other benefits to the plant, and can be stored for up to 150 days after treatment without causing damage to the seed. Finally, there is exclusive formulation for seed treatment. It offers a set of factors that protect the productive potential of the crop and assist in obtaining high productivity.
Could you talk about the three active ingredients of the product?
Fipronil controls the main soil pests, such as Elasmopalpus lignoselus (elasmus caterpillar), Aracanthus mourei (Torrãozinho) and Julus hesperus (Snake louse). Methyl thiophanate has a broad spectrum of control against soil fungi, e.g. Fusarium semitectum, Colletotrichum truncatum and Cercospora kikuchii. It also sterilizes the seeds for fungi of storage. Finally, pyraclostrobin helps in fungal control and promotes beneficial physiological effects for the plant, favoring selectivity and the early development of culture.
How does Standak® Does Top help improve crop productivity?
By ensuring good initial establishment and good protection, the culture develops and expresses its maximum productive potential. It is important to highlight BASF's innovative recipe, the Standak® Top & Votivo® Prime. It's about adding to traditional protection, a growth-promoting bionematicicide based on Bacillus firmus (Strain I-1582). Thus, health is combined with initial growth, with better use of water and nutrients. There will be greater chemical and biological synergism in the production system. Votivo® Prime sustains the shelf-life of 150 days after treatment, maintaining practicality, BASF recipe compatibility.
How does the physiological effect of Standak® Top?
The F500, the molecule of the active ingredient pyraclostrobin, acts physiologically on the plant, improving important attributes for its development. It encourages the production of the enzyme nitrate reductase in the plant, which improves the assimilation of nitrogen, an essential element for crop development. Also decreases cellular respiration, which increases the plant's net photosynthesis, leaving more photoassimilates available for use in the production of plant tissues and hormones. Furthermore, it reduces the production of ethylene, delaying the senescence of plant tissues, which can be seen in the extended cotyledon retention, an extremely important factor for increasing performance. Finally, it stimulates the production of auxin, a hormone linked to growth vegetable that helps in the initial start of the crop.
"The arrival of Standak® Top brought a new value proposition, a new concept for the importance of seed treatment. Practicality and other benefits perceived by the farmer in protecting his seed with the use of Standak® Top established a new level of protection requirements.
Added to this, over the last few years, there has been a notable improvement in quality of seeds produced and offered to the market. High cultivars performance, new technologies and traits -- all through the seed -- increased the importance of this input. And consequently, they increased the responsibility and requirement in the use of seed treatment.
Recently, BASF brought a new recipe for seed treatment: the association of Standak® Top with Votivo® Prime. This, a microbiological nematicide with growth-promoting effect (Bacillus firmus, lineage I-1582) which, when associated with Standak® Top, provides the farmer with advantages in protecting seeds and plants. All in reason for the synergistic action between the use of chemicals and biologicals.
As an example, we can mention the following benefits of this new solution:
• Protection against the main nematodes in different crops and production systems;
• Even greater physiological benefits, resulting from greater production of phytohormones (effect caused by Bacillus firmus bacteria) and, also, from the action of the active ingredient pyraclostrobin, contained in the product Standak® Top. As a result, there is greater root development and the aerial part of crops;
• Votivo® Prime induces resistance in plants through the action of enzymes. Furthermore, with the reduction in the number of root injuries caused by nematodes, there is less entry point for diseases at the root, causing improved performance in disease management;
• More developed roots result in better water absorption and nutrients;
• As a consequence, there are plants that are more tolerant to stress biotic and environmental;
• Thus, there is greater productivity for the farmer.
Finally, these innovative solutions have as their main objective protect the most noble input in the production process: the seed. Its about a tool for seeking to increase productivity, profitability and business sustainability.”
