The Gurupi Campus of the Federal University of Tocantins-UFT has, as part of its teaching, research and extension process, an Experimental Research Farm with an area of 130 hectares that now has the implementation of a forest genetic improvement program for the gender Eucalyptus which is being carried out with the participation of three institutions
Currently, the cooperative project, in addition to UFT, has the participation of the Institute of Forestry Research and Studies – IPEF of Piracicaba-SP and the Tocantins Research Support Foundation-FAPT. At UFT, the highlight is the participation of the Forestry Engineering course and the postgraduate program in Forestry and Environmental Sciences-PPGCFA-UFT.
The research work involves the installation of experiments on the Eucalyptus urophylla species with materials from various locations in the country and the world to study the silvicultural characteristics (plant height, tree trunk diameter and wood volume) of individuals that manage to survive and grow in the climatic conditions of the state of Tocantins (dry winter with high temperatures and low relative humidity).
In addition to development and growth assessments, the presence of the main diseases and pests present in this forestry crop in the state is also being verified. The project's main objective is, in the near future, to assist and make seeds or clones available to companies in the forestry sector and rural producers with quality and productivity, which unfortunately does not yet exist for the conditions in the region.
In conducting the project, the team is coordinated by Prof. Cristiano Moraes, assistant professor at the UFT Forestry Engineering course, Prof. Paulo Henrique Muller da Silva, IPEF Researcher, and students from the Forest Genetic Improvement research group - UFT Maria Isabel Barreto, Thatiele Moraes, Carlos Dourado, Joene Sousa and postgraduate students (PPGCFA-UFT) Natalia Carvalho and Franciele Meneses.
Another important point to highlight about the project is the support for academics in courses in the areas of Agricultural and Biological Sciences (Forest Engineering, Agronomy and Biology), who will be able to use the experimental network that is being built to develop scientific initiation, dissertations and theses . It is also important to highlight the importance that contact between students and researchers from other institutions will help improve knowledge and develop research and extension work to be carried out at the UFT-Campus of Gurupi and the region.
